Legends state that King Aksharaja and queen Dharanidevi who were devoid of a child performed a Yagna seeking the blessing of obtaining a child. 

The couple found a child on a thousand petal lotus, and named her as Padmavathi. The town of Tiruchanoor is more popular as Alarmelmangapuram or Alimelumangapuram where the terms Alar, Mel, Manga, and Puram means Lotus, top, Goddess and town respectively.

Visitors would be astounded with the marvellous structure built in Dravidian style of architecture. The temple in white and gold houses the idol of Goddess Padmavathi in a sitting posture holding lotus in both the upper hands. Other notable shrines are that of Lord Sri Krishna, Balarama, Sundarajan Swami and Suryanarayana Swamy.
