1. Tiger Hill

Tiger Hill is located at a distance of only 13 KM from Darjeeling. The first stop of your Darjeeling local sightseeing tour is perched at a height of 2,590 metres. Dawn and early mornings are the best time to visit Tiger Hill to enjoy a clear view of the glorious Kanchenjunga peak. Tiger Hill is also the summit of Ghoom. Ghoom is the highest railway station in the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. As mentioned earlier, the railway line is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The main attractions of Tiger Hill are its serene natural beauty and panoramic view of the hills of Darjeeling. You will also be able to spot a great many varieties of shrubs and flowers. The lofty height of Tiger Hill obstructs any cloud passing through it. This allows visitors to touch clouds at the summit of the hill!
If you carry a pair of binoculars, you will be able to see mountaineers hiking the Mt Everest and Kanchenjunga routes. From Tiger Hill, you will also be able to get a bird’s eye view of the town of Kurseong and Teesta, Mahananda, Mechi and Balason rivers.
- Must See / Things Do:: The most spectacular time to visit Tiger Hill is at sunrise. The sun rises through the peaks of Kanchenjunga and lends a golden hue to the mountains.
2. Batasia Loop

The next stop of your one day Darjeeling tour will be Batasia Loop. Batasia Loop is the toy train track of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railways. It is also counted among one of the most beautiful train tracks in the world. The train track coils around itself through a hilltop rail tunnel. Tourists visit Batasia Loop to enjoy the unparalleled beauty of the region. The loop is located on Hill Cart Road or NH 55, very close to the town of Darjeeling.
Another must visit site at Batasia Loop is the war memorial dedicated to martyred Gorkha soldiers of the Indian Army. The rail track also offers spectacular views of Kanchenjunga and Tiger Hill. You must visit Batasia Loop if you’re visiting with children or take interest in photography.
- Must See / Things Do:: The Eco Garden in Batasia is a great way to learn about organic plantations and farming techniques. Keep your eyes open for rhododendrons, silver firs and Ginkgo Biloba.
3. Japanese Peace Pagoda

The next stop of your Darjeeling local sightseeing tour is only 10 minutes away from the town and will be covered by the private rental cab. The Japanese Peace Pagoda of Darjeeling was built in 1972. It sought to bring together people from all walks of life and exist in perfect peace and harmony. The pagoda was constructed after receiving the blessings of Nichidatsu Fujii. Fujii was a Buddhist Monk who visited Darjeeling from Japan in 1972.
The temple is a spread over two floors and constructed in traditional Japanese style. Another attraction located close to the pagoda is a temple where you will find all the four avatars of Lord Buddha. The wooden staircase will take you up to a large prayer room. Photography of the pagoda is allowed but not in the prayer room during prayer hours.
The statue of Lord Buddha within the pagoda is also the tallest structure in Darjeeling. The statue is 28.5 meters tall and is the pride of the pagoda. Take a walk around, to witness some stunning artwork carved on a sandstone. These carvings depict the life and teachings of Lord Buddha. The pagoda also provides panoramic views of the hills surrounding Darjeeling.
- Must See / Things Do:: The prayer timings are from 4.30 to 6.30 in the morning and 4.30 to 6.30 in the evening. You may join in the prayer procession to witness the spiritual and cultural significance of the pagoda.
4. Observatory Hill

Observatory Hill is located near the Chowrasta Square in Darjeeling. This will be the fourth stop of the local Darjeeling sightseeing package. The ancient Dorje Ling Monastery used to be located at this site. Today, the most important attraction of Observatory Hills is the Mahakal Temple. This particular temple is of great importance to both Hindus and Buddhists. The hilltop is dotted with colourful flags, holy shrines, and temple bells.
While you are at Observatory Hill, also remember to stop by Chowrasta and The Mall. You may also visit Birch Hill and Jawahar Parbat. Tourists often stop by the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, Windemere Hotel and Government’s Tourist Lodge on their way back to Darjeeling from Observatory Hill.

5. Ghoom Monastery

Also known as Yiga Choeling, it is the oldest Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Darjeeling. The holy shrine was built by Lama Sherab in 1850.

The paintings on the walls of the monastery depict the life of Buddha, and Tibetan rituals.

6. Happy Valley Tea Estate
